The Money Market

After Erod's decision to add the University of Maryland's football camp to his list of wants, I had to contact them about the cost. These camps don't come cheap. For the 2 days in Boston we are paying $185, the 2 days in Maryland are $180, and the 2 days at USC are $165. Then the cost of commuting to the camps has to be factored in.

Erod will get a ride to Boston for the BC camp from a teammate's mother, but we will need to pay to get him home. Then the two of us will drive round-trip to College Park, MD for the UM camp - so that's at least $80 for gas and tolls and an overnight stay at a hotel. And then comes the big one, two airplane tickets to LA for the USC camp. We will stay with an old-NBA colleague of mine so we save on the lodging.

But any parent experiencing the recruiting process MUST factor in the cost of all of this. Yes, you may get lucky and get a full scholarship for your son (or daughter). But you must be very thorough in your calculations of all the extras to understand just what this will cost you and your family.

The costs of the recruiting process include: camps, hotels, gas, tolls, parking, tickets, cell phone usage, food, envelopes, stamps, DVDs (of highlights for Universities), clothes for the environment of special occasions at the schools, internet recruiting site fees, photo development costs, equipment, SAT/ACT test fees, etc.

I will be tallying up costs as we go along just so those of you reading along but unsure of the costs involved can have a better perspective.
